Radio components have become part of modern technologies for information transfer, control, diagnostics, or remote maintenance. However, the increasing number of devices connected wirelessly to the ever-thicker radio frequency spectrum requires strict adherence to regulatory requirements for radio products, as only reliable and fast wireless communication can support the development towards smarter solutions in all spheres of our lives.

Directive 2014/53/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council on the harmonization of the laws of the Member States relating to the making available on the market of radio equipment (RED) transposed into the law of the Slovak Republic (Order of the Government of the Slovak Republic No.193 of 8 June 2016 on market access for radio equipment), Article 3 defines essential requirements for radio equipment placed on the EU market.

All other radio equipment, like other electrical and electronic equipment, is subject to safety of use but without voltage limits and electromagnetic compatibility. In addition, radio equipment is subject to requirements for the effective use of radio spectrum to limit its interference to the operation of other radio equipment and specific requirements for certain categories or classes.

EU-marketed radio equipment is subject to the CE marking of product conformity with EU harmonized standards and EU Declaration of Conformity.

Typical examples of wireless communication are the following protocols:
  • Local area network (WLAN or Wi-Fi, ZigBee)
  • Personal Area Network (Bluetooth)
  • The Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Short Range Devices (SRD) from 9 kHz to 25 MHz (NFC, RFID)
  • Short Range Devices (SRD) from 25 MHz to 1000 MHz (Sigfox, LoRa, Z-Wave)
