Until the end of July 2017, the Energy Labeling System was regulate by on the Directive 2010/30/EU on the indication by labelling and standard product information of the consumption of energy and other resources by energy-related products.

From 1 August 2017, however, the original Directive is no longer valid due to the effectiveness of the new Regulation 2017/1369. The Regulation is directly applicable by its legal nature, therefore it does not require an adjustment of the legal framework of member states.

What's new in Regulation 2017/1369?

The most important change is the return to a scale in the range A to G (i.e. cancellation of the A +, A ++ and A +++ classes currently in use). The reason is better readability for the customer and easier comparison between products. The transition to the new scale will be progressive by replacing old labels with new ones.
In the first phase, the introduction of a new label will cover dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, washing machines combined with dryers, televisions and light sources and lamps. For these products, new labels will appear in stores and on the Internet by November 2, 2019 at the latest. The "pre-packing" of other products will follow, with the whole process being completed by 2030 for products in the field of heating and hot water.

By the time a new label is introduced, the labels with the highest grade A +++ will still be present on the appliances.

Another change introduced by the new Regulation 2017/1369 is launching a Product Database, which will work in the form of an internet application and will contain information about marketed products and labels. This will make it easy to compare the energy efficiency of individual products and choose the most economical one. Product information will be uploaded by the suppliers to the database and will be checked by the State Energy Inspection. The database will be created by the European Commission and will be launched on 1.1.2019.
